EditEdward Alexander "Ted" Harris - Born July 18, 1936 in Winnipeg, Manitoba is a Canadian former professional ice Hockey defenceman and coach.
Harris played his minor and junior Hockey in Winnipeg, playing 3 seasons with the Winnipeg Monarchs from 1953 to 1956. Harris was a tough defenceman, and help lead the defence for the Monarchs, who in 1955 won the Turnbull Cup as Manitoba Junior Hockey League / MJHL champions, and went to the Western Canada finals for the Memorial Cup.
Harris turned pro to start the 1956-57 season, playing with the Philadelphia Ramblers of the Eastern Hockey League / EHL. During his first season, Harris also played 2 games for the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League / AHL. Harris played another full season with the Ramblers.
Harris then started the 1958-59 season with the AHL Springfield Indians, but after 9 games was loaned to their affiliate , the Victoria Cougars of the Western Hockey League / WHL. After 1 season in Victoria, Harris was back in Springfield, playing with the Indians until 1963. Harris was a big part of the Indians team that won back to back Calder Cups in 1961 & 1962 as American Hockey League champions.
Harris was then traded to the Montreal Canadiens by Springfield with Wayne Larkin, Terry Gray, Bruce Cline and John Chasczewski for Wayne Boddy, Fred Hilts, Brian Smith, John Rodger, Lorne O'Donnell and the loan of Gary Bergman, June, 1963. Harris played for games for the Canadiens at the start of the 1963-64 season, scoring 1 assist. He was then sent to their AHL affiliate the Cleveland Barons, scoring 6 goals, 23 assists during the season, and then another 5 assists in the playoffs, as the Barons won the 1964 Calder Cup as AHL champions. Harris won the Eddie Shore Award for AHL - Outstanding Defenseman 1964, and he was named to the AHL First All-Star Team.
Harris would become a full-time Canadiens defensemen to start the 1964-65 season, and would help the Canadiens win 4 Stanley Cup championships over the next 6 seasons (1965, 1966, 1968, 1969). Harris played in Montreal until the end of the 1969-70 season.
The Minnesota North Stars claimed Harris from Montreal during the NHL Intra-League Draft, June 9, 1970. Harris played in Minnesota until he was traded to the Detroit Red Wings by Minnesota for Gary Bergman, November 7, 1973, and three months later he was traded again, this time to the St. Louis Blues with Bill Collins and Garnet Bailey for Chris Evans, Bryan Watson and Jean Hamel, February 14, 1974.
Harris was again traded, this time to the Philadelphia Flyers for cash, September 16, 1974. Harris would help the Flyers win the 1975 Stanley Cup championship, scoring 4 assists in the playoffs.
Harris retired from playing Hockey after the season as a Stanley Cup champion. He played in 788 regular season NHL games, scoring 30 goals, 168 assists and a even 1000 penalty minutes. He also played in 100 NHL playoff games, scoring 1 goal, 22 assists and 5 Stanley Cup championships.
Harris then coached for 3 seasons with the Minnesota North Stars from 1975 to 1978.
Ted Harris is a “Honoured Member” of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, enshrined in 1985.
