EditRaimo Ilmari Helminen - Born March 11, 1964 in Tampere, Finland is a Finnish retired ice Hockey centre and coach.
Helminen is the world record holder for most international games played by an ice Hockey player with 331, scoring 52 goals and 155 assists.
He is also tied with Teemu Selänne for being the ice Hockey players in the most Olympic Games played in with 6.
Helminen played 26 seasons as a professional, which is one of the longest careers in professional ice Hockey history.
Helminen started his career in his native town, playing for one of oldest teams in the country, Ilves. After two gold medals in junior leagues, Helminen got to play for Ilves in the SM-liiga, Finland's top ice Hockey league, in 1982.
Helminen first had international success in 1984 when Finland won silver in the U20 World Championship tournament in Sweden. Helminen broke the record then for most points scored in an under-20 tournament with 11 goals, 13 assists. He was named tournaments Best Forward and was selected for the All-Star team.
Helminen played most of his long career from 1981-2008 with Ilves Tampere.
Helminen played in the NHL with the New York Rangers 1985-1987, also playing 6 games for the Minnesota North Stars in March, 1987.
He went back to Ilves for the 1987-88 season, then back to the NHL for the 1988-89 season, playing 24 games with New York Islanders and 16 games with the AHL Springfield Indians.
From the 1989-90 season to 1995-96, Helminen played with Malmö IF, then finished his career with 12 straight seasons with Ilves.
Helminen played with the Finnish team at every Winter Olympics between 1984 and 2002. He won silver in 1988 and bronze medals in 1994 and 1998.
Helminen was also World Champion with the Finnish team in 1995 and won silver medals at the 1992, 1994, 1998, 1999 and 2001 World Championships and a bronze medal at the and 2000 World Championships.
Helminen played in the 1987 Canada Cup.
