Salming made his NHL debut with Toronto Maple Leafs on October 10, 1973 vs Buffalo Sabres at Maple Leaf Gardens in 7-4 Toronto win. Salming got 1 assist and was selected 1st Star of the game.

Salming was the first European-trained League player to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

A statue of Salming was unveiled on the Maple Leafs "Legends Row" outside Air Canada Centre in 2015, and Toronto raised his No. 21 to the arena's rafters in October, 2016.
In 2017 Salming was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
NOTE
During the 1976 Canada Cup, Salming was playing for Sweden and received a 30 second standing ovation from the patrons of Maple Leafs Gardens when his named was called as Sweden's lineup was introduced. The game was between Canada vs Sweden.
