Smith made his NHL debut with Toronto Maple Leafs on February 20, 1966 vs Detroit Red Wings at Detroit Olympia. He was brought in as relief to Gary Smith late in the 3rd period. Al Smith played almost 5 minutes, had 2 saves and 0 goals against as the Red Wings won 4-1.
Smith then got his 1st NHL start on February 23, 1966 vs Chicago Black Hawks at Chicago Stadium in a 3-2 Toronto win.
While playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Smith got his 1st NHL shutout vs Los Angeles Kings at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in a 1-0 Penguins win.
