Turnbull made his NHL debut with Toronto Maple Leafs on October 10, 1973 vs Buffalo Sabres at Maple Leafs Gardens in a 7-4 Toronto win.
Turnbull scored his 1st NHL goal vs Doug Grant of Detroit Red Wings at :14 seconds of the 1st period on October 30, 1973 at Maple Leaf Gardens in a 7-0 Toronto win. His goal was the game winner.
Turnbull had Börje Salming as his defense partner during his playing days in Toronto. His best season was 1976-77 when he set career highs with 22 goals, 57 assists, 79 points, and a +47 plus/minus rating with 84 penalty minutes.
Turnbull's 79 points still stands as the Maple Leafs team record for most points in a season by a defenseman.
Turnbull played in 628 regular season NHL games, scoring 123 goals (10 GWG), 317 assists with 736 penalty minutes and 55 NHL playoff games, scoring 13 goals, 32 assists with 94 penalty minutes.
Turnbull played in the 1977 NHL All-Star Game.
NOTE
Turnbull holds the NHL record for most goals in a game by a defenceman, with 5 in a game on February 2, 1977, in a 9–1 victory against the Detroit Red Wings. Turnbull only had 5 shots in the game, making him the first player in NHL history to score 5 goals on 5 shots. He scored the goals against both Ed Giacomin and Jim Rutherford.
Turnbull also scored 4 goals in a NHL game while playing for Los Angeles Kings vs Vancouver Canucks on December 12, 1981. He scored his 4 goals on Glen Hanlon.
