EditGary Alan "The Sarg" Sargent - Born February 8, 1854 in Red Lake, Minnesota is a American Indian (Ojibwa/Chippewa ) retired ice Hockey defenceman.
As a junior Hockey player, Sargent represented the United States at the 1973 Ice Hockey World Championships and the 1974 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
Sargent made his NHL debut with Los Angeles Kings on October 8, 1975 vs Montreal Canadiens at Montreal Forum in a 9-0 Canadiens win.
Sargent scored his 1st NHL goal vs Gary Simmons of California Golden Seals at 15:32 of 2nd period on October 18, 1975 at The Forum in a 5-3 Los Angeles win.
Sargent had a strong 1976-77 season with the Kings, scoring career high 14 goals and assists with 40, being named Kings defenceman of the year. He helped the Kings make it to the 2nd round in the 1977 NHL playoffs.
Sargent played 3 seasons for Los Angeles Kings, and 5 seasons for the Minnesota North Stars, becoming North Stars team captain during the 1978-79 season.
Sargent played in 402 regular season NHL games, scoring 61 goals (6 GWG), 161 assists with 273 penalty minutes and 20 NHL playoff games, scoring 5 goals (1 GWG), 7 assists with 12 penalty minutes.
Sargent represented the United States at the 1973 Ice Hockey World Championships, 1974 World Junior ice Hockey championships, and the 1976 Canada Cup.
Gary Sargent was inducted into the North American Indigenous Athletics Hall of Fame in 2022.
