The Red Wings then defeated Montreal 2-1 in best of 3 NHL quarterfinals, Boston 2-0 in semifinals and held a 3 games to 0 lead over Toronto in 1942 Stanley Cup finals, but allowed the Maple Leafs to win 4 straight and take the 1942 Stanley Cup championship. No team has accomplished the Toronto feat since.
The Red Wings did win the O'Brien Trophy as NHL playoff runner-up in 1942
