EditIn November 2000, this monument was installed outside the Hockey Hall of Fame. It commemorates Team Canada’s victory over the Soviet Union in the 1972 Hockey Summit Series, declaring them "Canada's Team of the Century".
As any Canadian is able to recount, the ’72 Summit Series was an eight game exhibition between the world’s two hockey superpowers of the day. But what began as an exhibition evolved into a bitter, brutal cold war on ice as the teams traded wins. Canadian identity came under siege as its players were depicted as goons and thugs compared to the stylish, finesse play of the Soviets. With the tense series tied at three wins apiece and one tie, it all came down to the deciding Game 8, Canada vs. CCCP, September 28, 1972.
In that final game, with the score tied and 34 seconds remaining, Paul Henderson scored the series-winning goal. Canada erupted in wild jubilation perhaps not equalled until another famous goal was scored in February 2010. Henderson went from obscure winger to National Hero and Legend. His goal is one of the most celebrated of all time.
This monument includes a chrome-plated bas-relief medallion set within a stylized bronze maple leaf. The artwork in the medallion depicts Paul Henderson's goal-scoring celebration. The granite base briefly describes the series and lists the Team Canada roster.
