Millen played in the 1968, 1969 and 1970 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournaments with Hockey teams from Toronto area.

Millen made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh Penguins on November 1, 1978 vs Washington Capitals at Capital Centre in a 6-4 Washington win.
Millen got his 1st NHL victory vs Capital Centre on November 8, 1978 at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in a 6-3 Penguins win.
Millen got his 1st NHL shutout vs St. Louis Blues on December 13, 1978 at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in a 3-0 Penguins win.
Millen played in 604 regular season NHL games, winning 215, losing 284 with 89 ties, a 3.88 GAA, 17 shutouts, 18 assists with 72 penalty minutes and 59 NHL playoff games, winning 27, losing 29 with a 3.43 GAA and 10 penalty minutes.
After retiring as a player, Millen got into television broadcasting of NHL games, working as a colour commentator and analyst for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada and Sportsnet. He also did coverage of the 1994 Winter Olympics and 2007, 2008 Stanley Cup finals.
