Sauvé played in the 1967 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament.

Sauvé made his NHL debut with Buffalo Sabres on October 13, 1976 vs New York Islanders at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in a 4-3 Islanders win.
Sauvé got his 1st NHL win on March 22, 1977 vs Atlanta Flames at Omni Coliseum in a 6-3 Buffalo win.
Sauvé got his 1st NHL shutout vs Quebec Nordiques on October 27, 1979 at Quebec Coliseum in a 3-0 Buffalo win.
Sauvé played in 420 regular season NHL games, winning 182, losing 154, 54 ties, 8 shutouts, 15 assists and 57 penalty minutes. He played in 34 NHL playoff games, winning 15, losing 16, 4 shutouts and 2 penalty minutes.
