Goring made his NHL debut on November 26, 1969 with Los Angeles Kings vs Chicago Black Hawks at Chicago Stadium in a 6-0 Chicago win.
Goring scored his 1st NHL goal vs Roger Crozier of the Detroit Red Wings at 18:38 of the 3rd period on November 27, 1969 at Detroit Olympia in a 5-1 Detroit win.
Goring scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs California Golden Seals on April 1, 1972 at The Fabulous Forum in a 9-4 Los Angeles win.
After 11 seasons seasons playing for the Kings, Los Angeles traded to Goring to New York Islanders in March, 1980 as they were preparing for the playoffs, and he scored 7 goals, 12 assists during the playoffs, helping the Islanders win their 1st Stanley Cup. A two-way forward, Goring and his gritty style of play and penalty killing were just what the Islanders needed.
In the 1981 Stanley Cup final, Goring scored a hat-trick in game 3, then had 2 goals in the final game, as the Islanders defeated Minnesota for their 2nd Stanley Cup championship. Goring was awarded the 1981 Conn Smythe Trophy with his 10 goals (2 GWG), 10 assist performance.
Goring played for Team Canada in the 1981 Canada Cup, scoring 3 goals, 2 assists in their 2nd place finish.
Goring had another strong playoff performance in 1982, scoring 6 goals (2 GWG), 5 assists as the Islanders won their 3rd straight Stanley Cup, and had 4 goals (1 GWG), 8 assists in the 1983 playoffs, as the Islanders won their 4th straight Stanley Cup.
Goring and the Islanders made it to their 5th straight Stanley Cup final in 1984, losing to Edmonton 4-1 in games, with Goring having 1 goal, 5 assists in the playoffs.
Goring started the 1984-85 NHL season slowly, scoring 2 goals, 5 assists 29 games, when the Islanders released him. He was signed by the Boston Bruins, playing 39 games and 5 playoff games for them before retiring and becoming the Bruins' head coach for a season and a half. After he was fired as the Bruins' coach in 1987, he played briefly for the Nova Scotia Oilers of the AHL before retiring for good.
Goring played 1107 regular season NHL games, scoring 375 goals (40 GWG), 513 assists and 134 NHL playoff games, scoring 38 goals (9 GWG / 2 OTG), 50 assists.
Goring would continue to coach for many years, including 2 seasons with the Islanders, and winning back to back Turner Cup championships (1995 & 1996) in the International Hockey League / IHL. He was also selected as IHL coach of the year both seasons.
Bob "Butch" Goring was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame in 1989.

Butch Goriing was inducted into the New York State Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022.
Butch Goring had his Jersey number 91 retired by the New York Islanders organization on February 29, 2020.
NOTE Goring was famous for wearing his vintage SPAPS helmet throughout his career. He had 2 SPAPS helmets, 1 for home games, 1 for away games, and had equipment staff repaint them when needed.
