EditWilliam John "Battlin Billy" Smith - Born December 12, 1950 in Perth, Ontario is a retired Canadian/American ice Hockey goalie and coach.

Smith made his NHL debut with Los Angeles Kings on February 12, 1972 vs Montreal Canadiens at Montreal Forum in a 6-5 Canadiens win.
Smith got his 1st NHL victory vs Buffalo Sabres on March 11, 1972 at The Forum in a 5-3 Los Angeles win.
Smith was claimed by the New York Islanders in NHL expansion draft, June 6, 1972 and played the rest of his career with the Islanders. He backstopped the Islanders to their 1st NHL win vs his old team Los Angeles on October 12, 1972 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in a 3-2 Islanders win.
Smith got his 1st NHL shutout vs Washington Capitals on October 20, 1974 at Capital Centre in a 5-0 Islanders win.
Smith scored a goal vs Colorado Rockies on November 28, 1979 at 4:50 of 3rd period into a empty net to tie the game, but the Rockies then scored 3 straight goals against him to win the game 7-4 at McNichols Sports Arena. He was the last Islanders player to touch the puck during a delayed penalty, when Colorado had a pass end up in their own net.
Smith played in 679 regular season NHL games, winning 305, losing 233 with 105 ties, 22 shutouts, 1 goal, 12 assists and 490 penalty minutes. He played in 132 NHL playoff games, winning 88, losing 36 with 5 shutouts. 2 assists and 89 penalty minutes.
When Smith retired, he left the game as the all-time NHL penalty minutes leader for goaltenders in both the regular season with 490 and playoffs with 89.
Smith played in 1978 NHL All-Star Game and was selected as MVP of the game.
Smith was selected to the NHL First All-Star Team in 1982.
Smith had his #31 jersey was retired by the New York Islanders on February 20, 1993.
Billy Smith was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1993.
Billy Smith was inducted in the Perth and District Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
In 2017 Smith was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
NOTE
Smith would never shake hands with the opposing team after a playoff series.
He has said his finest NHL game was when he shutout Edmonton in the first game of 1983 Stanley Cup finals 2-0, and called the '83 Stanley Cup championship his "most satisfying," alongside his first.
