Martin Alphonsos Burke - Born January 28, 1905 in Toronto, Ontario - Died March 7, 1968 was a Canadian ice Hockey defenceman and coach.

- O'Brien Trophy Champion 1929, 1931, 1932 with Montreal Canadiens.

- Stanley Cup Champion 1930, 1931 with Montreal Canadiens.

The Toronto native played with the St. Mary's junior and senior squads before spending two years with the Stratford Indians of the OHA senior league. After playing the 1926-27 season with the Port Arthur Ports, Burke joined the Montreal Canadiens for eleven games, making his NHL debut on November 15, 1927 vs New York Americans at Madison Square Garden in a 6-1 Montreal win.

Burke scored his 1st NHL goal vs Hap Holmes of Detroit Cougars at 18:46 of 3rd period on December 13, 1927 at Montreal Forum in a 6-1 Montreal win.

After the 11 games, Burke was then was loaned to the Pittsburgh Pirates for the remainder of the schedule. He returned to Montreal the next year and remained a member of their defensive brigade for nearly five years.

Burke helped the Canadiens to O'Brien Trophy wins as NHL Canadian Division champions in 1929, 1931 and 1932.

Following a trade in February, 1933 Burke spent the last 16 games of the 1932-33 NHL season with the Ottawa Senators before returning to Montreal for the 1933-34 season.

On October 3, 1934 he was part of a major trade that saw Lorne Chabot and Howie Morenz join him in Chicago in return for Lionel Conacher, Roger Jenkins, and Leroy Goldsworthy. Burke spent over three years solidifying the Black Hawks defense then returned to the Canadiens early in the 1937-38 season.

Burke retired that spring then spent a year coaching the senior Saskatoon Quakers before joining the Calgary Stampeders as their coach until 1950.

Burke played in 503 regular season NHL games, scoring 18 goals (5 GWG), 48 assists with 578 penalty minutes and 31 NHL playoff games, scoring 2 goals, 4 assists with 44 penalty minutes.

Burke has the "World Champions '29-'30" patch worn by the reigning Stanley Cup champion Canadiens in 1930-31 on the left sleeve of his "CH" sweater

NOTE
Burke may have been the first player to wear a helmet during an NHL game, donning one to protect an injured ear during a game in December 1928.
