William John Trevor "Jack" Evans - Born April 21, 1928 in Morriston, Wales, United Kingdom – Died November 10, 1996 in Manchester, Connecticut was a Welsh / Canadian ice Hockey defenceman and coach.

Evans did not begin playing Hockey until age 14, by age 20, a quick-learning Evans was a leading junior league defenceman with the Lethbridge Native Sons, helping them reach the Abbott Memorial Cup finals. That same year, he signed a minor league contract with the New York Rangers.

Evans joined the Lethbridge Maple Leafs for the 1948-49 season, and played 3 games with the Rangers during the season, making his NHL debut on March 15, 1949 vs Boston Bruins at Madison Square Garden in a 4-2 Bruins win. He also played in 2 games the following season. It was not until the 1950-51 season that Evans had the opportunity to suit up for 49 games for the Rangers, scoring his 1st NHL goal on March 17, 1951 vs Al Rollins of the Toronto Maple Leafs at 6:11 of 1st period at Maple Leaf Gardens in a 3-1 Toronto win. He also played for the AHL Cincinnati Mohawks during the season.

Evans played 52 games for the Rangers in 1951-52, again scoring just 1 goal, but also assisting on 6 others. Evans then found himself the following season playing in the Western Hockey League / WHL with the Saskatoon Quakers, and had a outstanding season scoring 9 goals and 22 assists, helping the team deep into the playoffs.

During the next 2 seasons, Evans found himself playing for both the Rangers and the Quakers, Evans finally cracked the Rangers regular lineup in 1955 and worked significant minutes for the next 3 seasons on the blue line.

In June, 1958, he was claimed by the Chicago Black Hawks in the Intra-League Draft, where he would play in a similar role for his final 4 NHL seasons in Chicago, being teamed with Dollard St. Laurent on the second pairing. Evans was a member of the 1961 Stanley Cup championship team, where Chicago ended the Montreal Canadiens of 5 consecutive championships when Evans knocked Jean Béliveau out of action with a clean, but bone-crunching hit. Evans scored 1 goal in the championship game 6.

Evans continued to play professional Hockey in the minor leagues for another 9 years - Buffalo Bisons (1963-64), Los Angeles Blades (1964-65), Vancouver Canucks (1965-66), California Seals (1966-67) retiring with the San Diego Gulls of the WHL after the 1971-72 season at the age of 44.

Evans played in 754 regular season NHL games, scoring 19 goals (3 GWG), 80 assists with 990 penalty minutes and 56 NHL playoffs games, scoring 2 goals, 2 assists with 97 penalty minutes.

In 1974, Evans was hired to coach the Salt Lake Golden Eagles of the Central Hockey League / CHL. After 1 season that included coach of the year honors (Jake Milford Trophy) and winning the Adams Cup as league champions, he was promoted to the parent club NHL California Golden Seals. He coached the anemic franchise in its final year in the Bay Area and its 2 seasons as the Cleveland Barons before the financially troubled organization merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978.

Evans returned to the CHL Salt Lake Golden Eagles, winning the Adams Cup in 1980 and 1981 as CHL champions, and also being awarded the Jake Milford Trophy in 1979 and 1980 as CHL coach of the year.

He was then hired by the NHL Hartford Whalers in 1983. In his 3rd season with the club, he earned a playoff berth, and in 1987, he led the club to a division title. A poor performance the following year resulted in Evans being fired midseason.

Many of Evans' former players went on to notable coaching careers themselves, including Dave Tippett, Joel Quenneville, Claude Julien, Alain Vigneault, and Doug Jarvis.

Jack Evans was inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.

Evans would be the 1st Welsh born Hockey player to win the Stanley Cup and to play in a NHL All-Star Game, when in 1961, he and his Chicago Black Hawks hosted the 15th National Hockey League All-Star Game at Chicago Stadium
