Graves made his NHL debut with Detroit Red Wings on October 9 1997 vs Edmonton Oilers at Northlands Coliseum in a 4-1 Red Wings win.

Graves scored his 1st NHL goal vs Allan Bester of Toronto Maple Leafs at 5:30 of 3rd period on October 15, 1988 at Maple Leaf Gardens in a 5-2 Red Wings win.

While playing for Edmonton Oilers, Graves scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Alain Chevrier of Chicago Blackhawks on December 17, 1989 at Chicago Stadium in a 6-5 Blackhawks win.

While playing for the New York Rangers, and during their NHL President's Trophy winning season in 1993-94, Graves became just the 2nd Ranger (Vic Hadfield 1st) to score 50 or more goals during the regular season. He had 52.

Graves played in 1152 regular season NHL games, scoring 329 goals (40 GWG / 5 OTG), 287 assists with 1224 penalty minutes and 125 NHL playoff games, scoring 38 goals (8 GWG / 1 OTG), 27 assists with 119 penalty minutes.

Graves played in 1994 NHL All-Star Game.

The New York Rangers retired Jersey number 9 in honor of Adam Graves and Andy Bathgate on on February 3, 2009.

Graves represented Canada at the 1988 World Junior Championships (5 goals), 1993 World Ice Hockey Championships (3 goals/3 assists), 1996 World Cup of Hockey (1 assist) and 1999 IIHF World Championship (8 goals/6 assists).
