The Canadiens played a 80 game regular NHL season, winning 52, losing 17 with 11 ties, finishing first in NHL Norris Division and Prince of Wales Conference.

In the 1979 NHL playoffs, the Canadiens defeated Toronto 4-0 in games in quarterfinals, Boston 4-3 in semifinals and New York Rangers 4-1 in finals to win 1979 Stanley Cup championship. Bob Gainey was the playoff MVP.

NOTE
Cournoyer was team *captain, but his back started to get bad again and he played his final NHL game vs Vancouver on November 18, 1978.
Serge Savard was interim captain and was given the Stanley Cup by Clarence Campbell.
