The Canadiens played a 80 game regular NHL season, winning 60, losing 8 with 12 ties, finishing 1st in NHL Norris Division and Prince of Wales Conference.
In the 1977 NHL playoffs, the Canadiens defeated St. Louis Blues 4-0 in games in quarterfinals, New York Islanders 4-2 in games in semifinals and Boston Bruins 4-0 in Stanley Cup championship.
NOTE
Many consider this Montreal team the Greatest Of All Time, losing just 8 games in regular season and 2 games in the playoffs. Losing once at the Montreal Forum in the regular season and once during the playoffs, and scored 216 more goals than they allowed.
Canadiens captain Yvan Cournoyer injured his back at the start of March, 1977 and did not play in any playoff games. Serge Savard served as interim captain and was presented with the Stanley Cup by NHL President Clarence Campbell.
