The Portland Rosebuds of the WCHL ceased operations after the 1926-26 season and Coffee tycoon Major Frederic McLaughlin bought the team from the syndicate who had been awarded the franchise by the NHL and moved them to Chicago.
McLaughlin evidently named the team in honor of the military unit he commanded "Black Hawk Division" after a Native American of the Sauk nation, Chief Black Hawk, who was a prominent figure in the history of Illinois.
Irene Castle, McLaughlin's wife designed the team logo and jerseys.
The Black Hawks would play their 1st NHL game on November 17, 1926 vs Toronto St. Pats at the Chicago Coliseum in a 4–1 Black Hawks win.
