The Detroit News staged the photo after the Red Wings clinched their 3rd straight Prince of Wales Trophy as NHL regular season champions and were defending Stanley Cup champs.

Jack Adams is touching the Stanley Cup before the 1951 playoffs were to begin. Detroit would lose to Montreal in first round 4-2 in games, losing all 3 home games.
Was it bad luck or karma to touch the Holy Grail before the playoffs started.

Rookie Terry Sawchuk played 70 games during the season winning 44 and his 1st Prince of Wales Trophy. He played all 6 playoff games too, actually more because game 1 had 4 OT periods and game 2 had 3 OT periods.

Everybody in this pic would be happy in the next bunch of years as Detroit won the cup 3 times in the next four seasons.
