Detroit goalie Normie Smith allowed 3 goals in the first 20 minutes of play in the first game of the finals, and was replaced by Earl Robertson, who would remain in the nets for Detroit for the remainder of the game and the next 4 games, becoming the first rookie goaltender to post two shutouts in the finals, in games 4 and 5. He never played for Detroit again.
Interestingly, Normie Smith was awarded the 1937 Vezina Trophy with a regular season record of 25 wins, 14 losses and 9 ties. He had 3 wins and 1 loss in the playoffs.
The 1937 Prince of Wales Trophy was awarded for being American Division regular season champions.
