Stoughton made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh Penguins on October 12, 1973 vs Atlanta Flames at Omni Coliseum in a 4-3 Pittsburgh win.

Stoughton scored his 1st NHL goal vs Ross Brooks of Boston Bruins at 14:13 of 1st period on February 3, 1974 at Boston Garden in a 5-4 Boston win.

Stoughton scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Don Edwards of Buffalo Sabres on November 21, 1979 at Springfield Civic Center in a 5-3 Hartford win. His 2nd goal was the game winner.

Stoughton played in the 1982 NHL All-Star Game.

Stoughton played in 526 regular season NHL games, scoring 258 goals (31 GWG / 1 OTG), 191 assists with 204 pwnalty minutes and 8 NHL playoff games, scoring 4 goals (1 GWG / 1 OTG), 2 assists with 2 penalty minutes.
