Jones played junior B with the hometown Greys then Barrie Flyers where he led the league in scoring despite being a defenceman. He then moved to the United Kingdom for a year where he worked for the Harringay Racers. In 1938-39 he played 11 games for Detroit and helped the team reach the Stanley Cup final. Over the next three years he played 23 games for the Wings but skated for the most part in the AHL with the Pittsburgh Hornets, Providence Reds and Indianapolis Capitals.
Late in the 1942-43 season Jones was loaned by Providence to the Toronto Maple Leafs for the last 16 regular season games and six post-season contests. He played for the Kingston Army in 1943-44 then served in the military for two years. After completing his service Jones played for a number of teams in five different leagues such as the USHL's Tulsa Oilers and the senior Nelson Maple Leafs in British Columbia. He retired in 1955 after playing his last year with the Valleyfield Braves in the Quebec Senior League.
