Joseph Anthony "Red Light" Miller - Born October 6, 1898 in Morrisburg, Ontario - Died August 1, 1963 in Toronto, Ontario was a Canadian ice Hockey goaltender.

- Stanley Cup Champion 1928 with New York Rangers.
Played 3 games in finals only.

Miller played his junior Hockey with Pittsburgh Athletic Association.

Miller then played with Renfrew Hockey Club and then the Ottawa New Edinburghs for 6 seasons. He then joined the Fort Pitt Hornets and St. Paul Saints before signing with the New York Americans in late February 1926.

Miller made his NHL debut with the Americans on November 15, 1927 vs Montreal Canadiens at Madison Square Garden in a 6-1 Canadiens win.

Miller got his 1st NHL victory vs Boston Bruins on November 26, 1927 at Boston Arena in a 4-3 OT Americans win.

Miller got his 1st NHL shutout vs Pittsburgh Pirates on November 29, 1927 at Madison Square Garden in a 1-0 Americans win.

Miller was a spare goalie for Montreal Maroons and NHL emergency back-up in 1928, when the New York Rangers lost their starting goalie Lorne Chabot to injury in game 2 of the 1928 Stanley Cup finals. Rangers coach/manager famously donned the goalie gear to finish the game, winning 2-1 in overtime. Joe Miller was then brought in to finish the series for the Rangers, losing his 1st game 2-0 to his teammates Montreal Maroons, then shut them out in in game 4 (1-0) and won game 5 (2-1) to win the 1928 Stanley Cup championship at Montreal Forum on April 14, 1928.

Miller finished his playing career with NHL Pittsburgh Pirates (1928-1930), Philadelphia Quakers (1930-31) and the IHL Syracuse Stars in 1932.

Miller played in 130 regular season NHL games, winning 24, losing 89 with 16 ties, 16 shutouts and a 2.89 GAA. In those 3 NHL playoff games, he won 2, lost 1 with 1.00 GAA.

Joseph ‘Joe’ A. Miller was posthumously inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame in 1967.

NOTE
Joe Miller also won a Grey Cup (Canadian Football) Championship in 1926 with Ottawa Senators (Rough Riders), joining Lionel Conacher and Carl Voss as the only players to win The Grey Cup & Stanley Cup. Wayne Gretzky & Normie Kwong joined this group, but as owners.
