Rivers played his junior Hockey with the Elmwood Millionaires, he captained them to back to back Manitoba championships.
Rivers made his NHL debut with Montreal Canadiens on January 25, 1930 vs Boston Bruins at Montreal Forum
in a 2-1 Bruins win.
Rivers scored his 1st NHL goal vs Roy Worters of New York Americans at 12:45 of 3rd period on March 18, 1930 at Montreal Forum in a 8-3 Canadiens win.
Rivers scored 2 overtime goals vs John Ross Roach, the 1st in the 4th overtime at 8:20, ending what was then the longest game in NHL history on March 28, 1930 when the Canadiens defeated New York Rangers 2-1 at Montreal Forum. His 2nd overtime winner was on January 20, 1931 at 6:14 of 1st overtime at Madison Square Garden in a 3-2 Canadiens win.
Rivers played in 88 regular season NHL games, scoring 4 goals (2 GWG / 1 OTG), 5 assists with 10 penalty minutes and 16 NHL playoff games, scoring 2 goals (1 GWG / 1 OTG), 0 assists with 2 penalty minutes.
Rivers later helped the Providence Reds win 2 Can-Am championships in 1932, 1934.
George (Gus) Rivers is a Honoured Member of the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame, inducted in 1985.
