Gainey Made his NHL debut with Montreal Canadiens on October 10, 1973 vs Minnesota North Stars at Metropolitan Sports Center in a 5-2 Canadiens win.
Gainey scored his 1st NHL goal vs Cesare Maniago of Minnesota North Stars at 19:03 of 3rd period at Montreal Forum in a 4-2 Canadiens win.
Gainey scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Daniel Berthiaume and Steve Penney of Winnipeg Jets on February 27, 1988 at Montreal Forum in a 6-0 Canadiens win.
Gainey was a crowd favourite at the Montreal Forum, and was also a cornerstone of the Montreal dynasty between 1976 and 1979, when the Canadiens won the Stanley Cup 4 consecutive times, and also allowed the fewest goals in the League in each of those championship seasons.
Gainey later captained the Canadiens for 8 years, including in 1985-86, when they had a young rookie in goal that took them to the Stanley Cup championship.
Gainey may have been the Best Defensive Forward in history, also being the 1st recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy in 1978, given to the NHL's top defensive forward. He won the next 3 as well, and is the only 4 time Selke winner.
Gainey played in 1160 regular season NHL games, scoring 239 goals (34 GWG / 1 OTG), 262 assists with 585 penalty minutes and 182 NHL playoff games, scoring 25 goals (7 GWG), 48 assists with 151 penalty minutes.
Gainey played in NHL All-Star Games 1977,1978,1980,1981.
After retiring as a player, Gainey coached the Minnesota North Stars, Dallas Stars and Montreal Canadiens .... also the general manager.
Bob Gainey was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992.

Bob Gainey was inducted into the Dallas Stars Hall of Fame in 2022.
On February 23, 2008, the Montreal Canadiens retired Gainey's #23 jersey
In 2017 Gainey was named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history.
