EditEdward "Ed" Giacomin - Born June 6, 1939 in Sudbury, Ontario is a Canadian retired ice Hockey goaltender.
Giacomin made his NHL debut with the New York Rangers on October 24, 1965 vs Montreal Canadiens in a 4-3 loss at Madison Square Garden. His 1st NHL victory came on October 30, 1965, a 8-2 Rangers win at Boston Garden.
Giacomin got his 1st NHL Shutout on October 23, 1966 vs Toronto Maple Leafs in a 1-0 win at Madison Square Garden.
Giacomin was named to the NHL First All-Star Team in 1967, 1971. He also played in the1968, 1969, 1970 and 1973 NHL All-Star games.
Giacomin played in the 1972 Stanley Cup finals vs Boston Bruins.
Giacomin was the Vezina Trophy winner in 1971 (shared with Gilles Villemure), when the Rangers allowed the fewest goals during the regular season.
Giacomin played 609 regular season NHL games, winning 290, 209 losses, 96 ties, a 2.82 goals-against average, .902 save percentage and 54 shutouts. He played 65 NHL playoff games, winning 29, 35 losses, 3 ties and 1 shutout.
His No. 1 was the second jersey number retired by the New York Rangers, on March 15, 1989.
Ed Giacomin was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1987.
