Åström made his NHL debut with New York Rangers on February 25, 1978 vs Montreal Canadiens at Montreal Forum in a 6-3 Rangers win, making Åström the 1st Swedish goaltender to Start a NHL game and also the 1st Swedish goaltender to win a NHL game.
Åström won 2 of his first 4 NHL starts, but the Rangers traded him to Colorado Rockies in July 1979.
Åström played the rest of his NHL career for the Rockies.
Åström played in 83 regular season NHL games, winning 17, losing 44, 12 ties, 3.75 GAA, 1 assist with 8 penalty minutes.
