The Soviet Union spanked Canada in a single game final 8-1 to win the 1981 Canada Cup. There was controversy when the Soviets tried to keep the Canada Cup Trophy and bring it back to Russia. Tournament organizer Alan Eagleson stepped in to take the trophy back.

The world's top six Hockey nations were invited. The games were held in Edmonton, Winnipeg, Montreal and Ottawa.
