The New York Islanders finished the 1979-80 NHL regular season with 39 wins, 28 losses, 13 ties which put them in 5th place overall and 2nd in their Patrick Division.

In the Stanley Cup playoffs, they defeated Boston 4-1 in games, Buffalo 4-2 in games and Philadelphia 4-2 in games for championship.
Bob Nystrom scored the Stanley Cup winning goal at 7:11 of the 1st overtime.
