Johnson made his NHL debut with Pittsburgh Penguins on March 2, 1980 vs New York Islanders at Pittsburgh Civic Arena in a 0-0 tie.
Johnson scored his 1st NHL goal vs Markus Mattsson of Winnipeg Jets at 2:41 of 1st period on March 23, 1980 at Winnipeg Arena in a 4-2 Penguins win. He had 2 goals in the game, his 2nd goal the game winner.
While playing for the Hartford Whalers, Johnson scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Billy Smith and the New York Islanders on February 12, 1983 at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in a 4-2 Whalers win.
Johnson played in 669 regular season NHL games, scoring 203 goals (19 GWG), 305 assists with 269 penalty minutes and 37 NHL playoff games, scoring 16 goals (2 GWG), 12 assists with 10 penalty minutes.
Johnson played in the 1984 NHL All-Star Game.
Johnson represented the United States 13 times, 9 at the World Championships, 1 Winter Olympics and 3 Canada Cups. In 89 games, he scored 23 goals, 31 assists with 42 penalty minutes.
In The Miracle on Ice game vs the Soviets, Johnson scored the tying goal late in the 1st period (19:59) for a 2-2 tie and again tied the game in the 3rd period (8:39) for a 3-3 tie, which allowed Mike Eruzione to score the game winner with 10 minutes to play, which the USA won 4-3.
In the Gold Medal game vs Finland, Johnson assisted on the game winner in the 3rd period and scored a shorthanded goal for the clincher late in the 3rd, as Team USA won 4-2.
After retiring as a player, Johnson turned to coaching, helping the USA Women win a Silver Medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics and has set a NCAA Women's Ice Hockey recored, winning 8 Division 1 championships.
Mark Johnson was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999.
Mark Johnson was inducted into the Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
Mark Johnson was elected to the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
