February 14, 1934 at Maple Leaf Gardens

Gardiner was having a outstanding season when this photo was taken.
He was named as Chicago Black Hawks captain at the start of the 1933-34 NHL season.
He posted a 20–17–11 record (10 shutouts), winning the 1934 Vezina Trophy.

In the 1934 NHL playoffs, Gardiner had a 6–1–1 record, with two shutouts and a 1.33 goals against average, as he backstopped Chicago to the 1934 Stanley Cup championship, the 1st in franchise history. Gardiner is the only NHL goaltender to captain his team to a Stanley Cup win.

Gardiner had also been playing with a tonsillar infection for most of the season, something he was quietly battling for almost 2 years. On June 10th, he collapsed and went into a coma. Gardiner died on June 13, 1934, from a brain hemorrhage brought on by the infection.

In 1945, Gardiner became a charter member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
