The New Brunswick Hawks played a 79 game regular AHL season, winning 44, losing 27 with 8 ties and finished 1st in AHL North Division, winning the F. G. "Teddy" Oke Trophy,
In the 1980 AHL playoffs, the Hawks defeated Adirondack Red Wings 4-1 in games in Division Semifinals, the Maine Mariners 4-2 in games in Division Finals and then lost to Hershey Bears 4-2 in games in Calder Cup championship.
Darryl Sutter was awarded the Dudley "Red" Garrett Memorial Award as AHL Rookie of the Year.
