Tikkanen made his NHL debut with the Edmonton Oilers on May 23, 1985, which was game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals vs Philadelphia Flyers at The Spectrum in a 3-1 Edmonton win. He got a 2 minute penalty for slashing in the 1st period.

Tikkanen scored his 1st NHL goal vs Greg Millen of the St. Louis Blues at :41 of the 3rd period on October 13, 1985 at Northlands Coliseum in a 6-3 Edmonton win.

Tikkanen scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Clint Malarchuk of the Quebec Nordiques on October 15, 1986 at Northlands Coliseum in a 5-2 Edmonton win.

Tikkanen played in 877 regular season NHL games, scoring 244 goals (41 GWG / 3 OTG), 386 assists with 1077 penalty minutes and 186 NHL playoff games, scoring 72 goals (11 GWG / 4 OTG), 60 assists with 275 penalty minutes.

Tikkanen played on the NHL All-Stars team at Rendez-vous '87

Representing Finland, Tikkanen played in 3 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships, 5 World Ice Hockey Championships, 2 Canada Cups and the 1998 Winter Olympics, winning a Silver Medal at 1984 World Junior Championships, Bronze Medal at 2000 World Championships and a Bronze Medal at 1998 Winter Olympics. Tikkanen represented Finland 82 times.

Esa Tikkanen was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Finland / Soumen Jääkiekkomuseo in 2003. Players are known as Ice Hockey Lions / Jääkiekkoleijonat.

NOTE
Tikkanen holds the NHL record for scoring two shorthanded goals in the shortest time (12 seconds apart). Edmonton vs Toronto - 1st period (10:44 and 10:56) at Maple Leafs Gardens in a 6-2 Edmonton win. He had a hat-trick and 1 assist in the game.
