After finishing his junior Hockey with Porcupine Combines, Kitchener Greenshirts and Montreal Canadiens Jr. team, McCord started his pro career with the Springfield Indians in the American Hockey League / AHL.
Playing for the Springfield Indians, McCord became a solid defenceman, a tough player that could also score. He anchored the defence that brought 3 straight Calder Cup championships to Springfield. The 1st AHL team to win 3 in a row (1960, 1961, 1962).
After another season with the Springfield Indians, McCord made his NHL debut with Boston Bruins on October 8, 1963 vs Montreal Canadiens at Boston Garden in a 4-4 tie.
McCord scored his 1st NHL goal vs Jacques Plante of New York Rangers at 2:56 of 2nd period on December 7, 1963 at Boston Garden in a 8-6 Bruins win.
Boston traded McCord to Detroit Red Wings in June, 1965, where he was in and out of their line-up for the next 3 seasons, playing mostly wth the Red Wings farm team, the Pittsburgh Hornets, helping them win the 1967 Calder Cup championship.
Detroit traded McCord in mid October, 1967 to Minnesota North Stars, and he helped the North Stars reach the 7th game in 1968 Stanley Cup semi-finals vs St. Louis. McCord played 1 more NHL season with the North Stars, before joining the Western Hockey League / WHL Phoenix Roadrunners for the 1969-70 WHL season.
McCord found a new team the next season when St. Louis bought his contract from Minnesota, sending him to the WHL Denver Spurs, named captain of the team, McCord helped the Spurs win the 1972 Lester Patrick Cup.
McCord would play another NHL season when St. Louis called him up for 43 games during the 1972-73 season.
McCord would play another WHL season with Denver, while also coaching them in 1973-74.
McCord played in 316 regular season NHL games, scoring 10 goals, 58 assists with 257 penalty minutes and 14 NHL playoff games, scoring 2 goals, 5 assists with 10 penalty minutes.
McCord played in 635 regular season AHL games, scoring 81 goals, 252 assists with 551 penalty minutes and 59 AHL playoff games, scoring 4 goals, 22 assists with 89 penalty minutes.
McCord was also named to 5 postseason All-Star Teams during his AHL career, and named to 2 AHL First Team (1960-61, 1966-67) and 3 Second Team.
