Owen was admitted to Harvard University in 1919, and would become a three-sport star at Harvard, playing football, baseball and Hockey. He was awarded the university's Wingate Cup for best all-around athletic ability. When he arrived at Harvard, 5-10, 189-pound George Owen, Jr. quickly set about beating Yale and other respected opponents on the gridiron, Hockey rink and baseball diamond.
After he graduated, Owen entered the brokerage business while continuing to play Hockey for the Boston University Club, also playing for the Boston A. A. Unicorns. He was invited to play for the United States Olympic Team in 1924, but declined because of business obligations.

Owen made his NHL debut that evening vs Toronto, also scoring his 1st NHL goal vs Lorne Chabot at 15:04 of 3rd period at Boston Garden in a 5-2 Bruins win. However, Marty Burke of the Montreal Canadiens is known to have worn a helmet briefly during a game in December 1928, and Ernie “Moose” Johnson is wearing a football helmet in a PCHA 1914 Portland Rosebuds photo.
Following his playing career, Owen became head coach of the Michigan Tech Huskies men's ice Hockey team. He later coached football, baseball and Hockey at Milton Academy.
