The 1953 Ice Hockey World Championships were held in in Basel and Zurich, Switzerland from March 7 to March 15, 1953.
Sweden won it's 1st World Championship and 7th European Championship. Team captain Åke Andersson atop podium.
West Germany placed 2nd, despite a record of just one win and three losses because Czechoslovakia's players returned home without finishing the tournament as a gesture of mourning over the death of its President Klement Gottwald.
Switzerland placed 3rd. Gebhard Poltera receiving handshake.
Switzerland was awarded the Fair Play Cup.
NOTE
This was the first world championship tournament with only European teams.
