EditWladislaw Laudas Jozef "Duke" Dukowski (Dutkowski) - Born August 31, 1900 in Romania / Austria-Hungary - Died September 26, 1976 in North Vancouver, British Columbia was a Canadian ice Hockey defenseman, coach and general manager.
Dukowski and his family immigrated to Canada in August 1903, moving to Regina, Saskatchewan, where Duke played all his minor and junior Hockey. Duke started his junior playing days with the Regina Victorias in 1916, but was soon signed to play with the Regina Patricia Hockey Club / Regina Pats for their inaugural season in 1917.
Dukowski helped the Regina Pats win the Saskatchewan junior Hockey league / SJHL championship in 1918 and the very 1st Abbott Memorial Cup, winning the 1919 Abbott Cup championship. Duke and the Pats also played in the 1919 Memorial Cup championship finals, losing to the University of Toronto Schools in a two-game, total goal series 29 goals to 8.
Dukowski joined the senior Regina Victorias for the 1920-21 season, helping the Victorias win the 1921 Saskatchewan Senior Hockey League / SSHL championship.
Dukowski turned pro with the Saskatoon Sheiks to start the 1921-22 season, but the team had to move part way through the season (February 1, 1922), and became the Moose Jaw Sheiks, where he finished the season in 1922.
Dukowski then signed with the Western Canada Hockey League / WCHL Regina Capitals, and played with the Capitals until 1925. While playing with the Capitals, Duke helped the team to the WCHL championship finals in both 1923 and 1924.
The Regina Capitals moved their team to Portland, Oregon to start the 1925-26 season, and renamed themselves the Portland Rosebuds and would now play in the Western Hockey League / WHL. After that season, the Western Hockey League folded. The National Hockey League bought every contract of every player from the WHL for $258,000. The former Capitals/Rosebuds players would go on to form the nucleus of the expansion NHL Chicago Black Hawks franchise, which began play the following season.
Dukowski was now a NHL pro, making his NHL debut on November 17, 1926 vs Toronto St. Patricks at Chicago Stadium in a 4-1 Black Hawks win.
Dukowski scored his 1st NHL goal vs Hap Holmes of Detroit Cougars at 18:30 of 2nd period on March 8, 1927 at Border Cities Arena in a 4-1 Black Hawks win. His goal was the game winner.
Dukowski scored 3 goals, 2 assists in his first NHL season (1926-27). Duke was then sent down to the minors, and played 2 seasons with the AHA Kansas City Pla-Mors.
Dukowski was back with the Black Hawks to start the 1929-30 NHL season, and was named team captain. Duke played with the Black Hawks until he was claimed on waivers by the New York Americans from Chicago, February 13, 1931. Dukowski played with the Americans for over a full season, and was then loaned back to Chicago by the Americans for remainder of 1933-34 season, December 15, 1933.
Dukowski was recalled by the New York Americans and then traded to the New York Rangers for cash, January 3, 1934, where he finished his Hockey career in 1934 - In his final season, 1933-34, Dukowski played for the Americans (9 games), the Chicago Black Hawks (5 games) and the New York Rangers (29 games).
Dukowski played in 200 regular season NHL games, scoring 16 goals (7 GWG), 30 assists with 186 penalty minutes and 6 NHL playoff games, having 6 penalty minutes.
Dukowski then coached the Regina Victorias for a few seasons.
NOTE: Dutkowski and his brother Joe asked to have the (t) removed from their surname so it would read as "Dukowski" rather than "Dutkowski". Joe won a Memorial Cup in 1930 with the Regina Pats.
