EditIan Montgomery has completed a large stained glass panel of legendary Hockey player Maurice Richard of the Montreal Canadiens. "It took hundreds of hours to create" stated Montgomery. Constructed from recycled glass, "The Spirit of the Canadiens" is Montgomery's largest panel creation to date. With dimensions of 65 inches by 46 inches, it is no understatement that the panel weighs roughly 70 pounds.
Mirroring the Tiffany style of painted face, hands, and feet, Montgomery's depiction of "The Rocket" does not miss any important details of one of Canada's most prominent athletic figures. "He's got such an expressive mouth, and I really wanted to capture Richard's infamous snarl" added Montgomery. Indeed, the panel does not lack projecting the famous dark eyes that instilled fear in many of the NHL players from "The Rocket's" time.
With the assistance from such local businesses as Keith Hill's 'Laser Imprints', Robert Vondebelt's 'The Country Cornershop,' and the 'Sandpiper Studio' in Belleville, Montgomery's large piece was able to be created. "I am also very appreciative of the help from Jim Pigden and his family. Living off-the-grid is very difficult for some of my electrical needs and the Pigden's were very gracious in letting me have my kiln at their place of business" said Montgomery.
