EditNorman Lawrence "Normie" Himes - Born April 1, 1900 in Galt, Ontario – Died September 14, 1958 in Galt, Ontario was a ice Hockey centre and coach.
Himes was a star athlete in Galt when he was a youth and teenager, excelling in Hockey, baseball and golf. Hockey was his love and it brought him to the big lights of Broadway, where he would also become friends with Yankees Legends Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.

Himes played all his early Hockey in his home town of Galt, first with the Terrier Pups, then their AAA intermediate team, helping them win the Ontario intermediate championship in 1921. He played 3 seasons with the Galt senior team before signing with the NHL New York Americans in October 1926.
Himes made his NHL debut on November 16, 1926 vs Pittsburgh Pirates at Duquesne Gardens in a 1-0 Americans win.
Himes scored his 1st NHL goal vs Clint Benedict of Montreal Maroons at 19:40 of 1st period on November 25, 1926 at Montreal Forum in a 4-1 Americans win.
Himes scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Charlie Gardiner of Chicago Black Hawks on February 18, 1930 at Chicago Stadium in a 6-4 OT win for the Americans. His 3rd goal was the game winner and he assisted on the 6th goal. Overtime in those days was a 10 minute period, regardless of how many goals were scored.
Himes played in 402 regular season NHL games, scoring 107 goals (20 GWG / 4 OTG), 112 assists with 125 penalty minutes and 2 NHL playoff games with 0 points or penalties.
Himes was selected to play on the NHL All-Stars Team in the Ace Bailey Benefit Game at Maple Leaf Gardens on February 14, 1934 .... it is considered the 1st NHL All-Star Game.
Himes played his whole NHL career for the New York Americans and holds theirs records for most games (402 + 2 = 404), most goals (107) and most points (219).
Himes finished his playing career with New Haven Eagles, acting as a player coach from 1935 to 1937, then coaching full time. He later coached the Guelph Indians, Galt Red Wings and Galt Black Hawks. Himes coached a young Terry Sawchuk during the 1946-47 OHA season with Galt Red Wings.
Himes later became a golf pro at clubs: Galt’s Riverview Gold Club and Westmount Club in Kitchener.
Normie Himes was inducted into the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
In 1999, Normie Himes was named Cambridge Male Athlete of the 20th Century.
Norman Himes was inducted into the Waterloo Region Hall of Fame.
NOTE
Himes is the only NHL forward/defenceman to play a full game in net as a goalie on December 1, 1928 vs Toronto Maple Leafs at Mutual Street Arena in a 3-0 Toronto win. The Americans goalie Jake Forbes was injured and couldn't play.
Himes had played in goal once before for almost the whole 3rd period (19 minutes) in a game vs Montreal Canadiens on December 3, 1927 at Montreal Forum in a 4-0 Canadiens win. Himes did not let in a goal.
