Edit1980 Bob Nystrom Stanley Cup Finals Game Six, Game Worn New York Islanders Jersey.
The date was May 24, 1980, and the Islanders were hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, leading the Stanley Cup Finals by a tally of three games to two. A blown call by referee Leon Stickle had given the home team an early lead but Philadelphia bravely battled back, and at the end of regulation the score was deadlocked at four. Almost seven minutes into sudden-death, coach Al Arbour sent his third line of Lorne Henning, John Tonelli and Nystrom onto the ice. Henning, an original Islander like Nystrom, collected the puck in the defensive half and passed across the red line to Tonelli, cutting into the middle from left to right. He bore down on Flyers defenseman Moose Dupont as he crossed the blue line and spotted Nystrom breaking for the net a half stride ahead of defender Bob Dailey, threading a perfect pass onto Nystrom's stick. A quick backhand thrust lofted the puck on goal, barely clearing goalie Pete Peeters' blocker to win the New York Islanders 1st Stanley Cup.
