A photographic portrait of Charlotte 'Lottie' Dod (1871-1960), taken by W & D Downey. Dod appears dresed in her tennis outfit, complete with matching cap. She became the youngest Wimbledon Singles Champion in 1887, aged 15 years and 285 days, and went on to gain four more title victories. As she was so young, Dod was given special dispensation and allowed to play matches in shorter skirts than the petticoats women normally had to wear. This gave her an advantage, as she could move acros court with les restriction. Dod also became an accomplished sportswoman beyond the tennis world. She was a member of the national field Hockey team, British Amateur golf champion in 1904 and the archery silver medalist at the 1908 Olympics
