EditWilliam David "Billy" Christian - Born January 29, 1938 in Warroad, Minnesota is an American retired ice Hockey right winger/center, coach and Hockey stick manufacturer.
- Winter Olympics Gold Medal Champion 1960 with Team USA.
Billy scored the tying goal and the game winner vs the Soviets (3-2) which put the Americans in position to win the Gold Medal if they defeated the Czechs in the final game, which they did 9-4 with Billy picking up 3 assists.
This Gold Medal team was later considered the Forgotten Miracle.
- 1962 Ice Hockey World Championships Bronze Medal Winner with Team USA.
Christian learned to skate and play Hockey on their local Warroad river in the 1940s and 50s.
Christian played on the United States teams at the 1958, 1962, and 1965 World Championships and the 1964 Olympics.
William "Bill" Christian was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1984
Bill Christian was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 1998.
Bill Christian and his broth Roger started Christian Brothers Hockey Company / Christian Brothers, Inc. in 1964 specializing in wooden Hockey sticks and later a Hockey equipment manufacturing company.
They made the sticks for the Hockey movie "Miracle".
In 2002 the brothers were forced to sell their business because of strong competition and a high US dollar that impeded their export sales. The Christian Bros. naming rights and trademarks would change hands numerous times over the years after the original sale, but the heart and soul of the companies manufacturing plant left Warroad in 2009.
NOTE
Bill's son Dave Christian was on the Miracle on Ice Team in 1980, and led all USA players in assists, winning the Gold Medal.
