Gordie Howe started his NHL career in the 1946-47 NHL season. After the 1970-71 NHL season, Howe would retire, only to join the Houston Aeros of the World Hockey Association for the 1973-74 season, playing 6 seasons in the WHA and 1 last season in the NHL with Hartford Whalers in 1979-80.

Clarence Campbell became NHL president in 1946, serving until 1977.
