Marjorie Anne Pollard OBE - Born August 3, 1899 in Rugby, Warwickshire, England – Died March 21, 1982 in Bampton, Oxfordshire, England was an English field Hockey striker, centre forward, coach, journalist, author, broadcaster, film maker and president.

Pollard's long and successful sporting career (cricket, tennis, golf, track) began in field Hockey where she played for the Midlands, Northants, North Northants, Peterborough (captain 1915-17) and Northamptonshire Hockey Clubs, also playing for England (captain) teams.

In 1926, she scored 13 goals against Wales in a 20–0 win, she scored all 8 goals in another shutout against Germany, as well as 5 against Scotland, 7 against Ireland, and 5 against South Africa in other years. She still holds the record for most goals scored (115) for her country.

In the 1930s, she was making films. Many of them were international Hockey games. She also made films about coaching techniques and they were loaned out to clubs and schools by the governing body of women’s Hockey, the AEWHA.

Following her retirement as a Hockey player in 1933, Pollard went on to become the Acting President of the All England Women’s Hockey Association / AEWHA.

Pollard was also employed as a sports journalist, writing for such leading newspapers as The Times, The Guardian, and the Morning Press.

Her first broadcasting commentary was a men's cricket match in 1935., becoming the 1st woman to commentate on sport for the BBC.

She was also editor of Hockey Field magazine from 1946 to 1970.

Pollard received the Order of the British Empire / OBE in January, 1965

In 2020, a blue plaque was installed in her honour by the Peterborough Civic Society at the Lincoln Gate Sheltered Housing development, which was built on the site of her old Peterborough County School.

Marjorie Pollard was inducted into the Peterborough County Grammar School for Girls.

The Marjorie Pollard Salver was first awarded to Player of the Match at the annual Wembley International, then was awarded to the outstanding English female Hockey player each year.
