The 1994 Men's Ice Hockey World Championships went to a shootout for the championship.
Teams were tied 1-1 after regulation and OT.

In the shootout, each team had 5 shooters, with Canada scoring on 2 chances.....Luc Robitaille and Joe Sakic. Finland also scored on 2 chances....Jari Kurri and Mikko Mäkelä. Then sudden death with each team having a chance each until someone scores. Luc Robitaille scored for Canada and Bill Ranford stopped Mika Nieminen of Finland.

Canada defeated Finland in the shootout to capture the gold medal. Final official score 2-1.

- Ranford was selected by the directorate as the tournaments Best Goaltender. Ranford was also selected to the Media All-Star Team.

- Mäkelä finished tied for 6th in points with 9 and tied for second in goals with 5. Mikko Mäkelä is known as the "Flying Finn"

This was the first World Ice Hockey Championship for Canada since the 1961 Trail Smoke Eaters, who represented Canada. 33 year wait.
