Mogilny played his junior Hockey with CSKA Moscow (Red Army Team), a senior team in the Soviet Union. While playing for the National Team, Mogilny became the 1st Soviet Hockey player to defect to North America in May, 1989 after the World Championships in Sweden.
Mogilny made his NHL debut with Buffalo Sabres on October 5, 1989 vs Quebec Nordiques, also scoring his 1st NHL goal vs Stéphane Fiset at :20 of 1st period at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in a 4-3 Sabres win. He scored on his 1st NHL shift. Mogilny wore #89 to signify the year he defected.
Mogilny scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Don Beaupre of Washington Capitals on March 31, 1991 at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in a 5-2 Sabres win. His 2nd goal was the game winner.
Mogilny set career highs during the 1992-93 season, scoring 76 goals and 127 points for the Sabres.
Mogilny played in Buffalo for 6 seasons until he was traded to Vancouver Canucks in July 1995. He scored 55 goals (107 pts) the 1st season as a Canuck, the 2nd most of his NHL career.
The Canucks would trade Mogilny to New Jersey Devils on March 14, 2000, and he would help the Devils win the 2000 Stanley Cup championship. Mogilny was now a member of the "Triple Gold Club"
Mogilny played the full next season in New Jersey and then was signed as unrestricted free agent by Toronto Maple Leafs in July 2001.
Injuries started to catch up to Mogilny and he later finished his NHL career back with the Devils in 2005.
Mogilny played in 990 regular season NHL games, scoring 473 goals (66 GWG / 1 OTG), 559 assists with 432 penalty minutes and 124 NHL playoff games, scoring 39 goals (5 GWG), 47 assists with 58 penalty minutes.
Mogilny played in the NHL All-Star Games 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996.
Alexander Mogilny was inducted into Buffalo Sabres Hall of Fame in 2011.
Alexander Mogilny was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.
Alexander Mogilny was inducted into Hockey Hall of Fame in 2025.
NOTE
Mogilny holds the Russian / Soviet Union Record as the youngest ice Hockey player to win a Winter Olympics Gold Medal.
