Bourbonnais played his junior Hockey with the Edmonton Oil Kings from 1960 to 1963, and as team captain brought Edmonton their 1st Memorial Cup championship in 1963. He played in 3 Memorial Cup finals with Edmonton.
The Detroit Red Wings held his NHL rights, but Bourbonnais decided to stay in school at University of Alberta and University of British Columbia, eventually getting a bachelor’s of arts degree and later a law degree from University of Manitoba. He would become a lawyer specializing in commercial law.
Bourbonnais did briefly play after junior Hockey with teams from the Winnipeg Maroons and Edmonton Monarchs.
While in University, Bourbonnais was a big part of the Canadian National Ice Hockey Team, becoming a member of Father David Bauer's Canadian National Team from the time of its inception in 1963-64, until the team withdrew from international competition after 1969.
Bourbonnais twice played the Soviets in the Winter Olympics (1964 & 1968) in what could have been a gold medal game, losing both times.
Roger Bourbonnais was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999.
Roger Bourbonnais was inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame in 2011.
