Marshall then made his NHL debut with Detroit Red Wings on November 14, 1965 vs Montreal Canadiens at Detroit Olympia in a 2-2 tie.

Marshall scored his 1st NHL goal during the playoffs vs Glenn Hall of Chicago Black Hawks at 6:00 of 3rd period on April 10, 1966 at Chicago Stadium in a 7-0 Red Wings win.

Marshall finished runner-up for the Calder Memorial Trophy as Rookie of the Year in 1965-66.

Detroit would trade Marshall in January, 1968 to the Oakland Seals, where he would be named alternate captain 1969. Marshall was with Oakland when they changed their name to California Golden Seals for the 1970-71 NHL season. He would be named Seals captain for the 1972-73 season.

Marshall had played the most games in Seals history, when he was a late-season trade (March 4, 1973) to the New York Rangers before they were eliminated by Boston in the playoffs.

Al Arbour, coach of the New York Islanders had been keeping a eye on Marshall and knew of his leadership skills, convincing GM Torrey to get him in the 1973 NHL Intra-League Draft. Arbour wanted Marshall to teach and mentor the young Islanders team they were building.

The Islanders improved every year of the 6 seasons Marshall played there, also becoming just the 2nd NHL team to come back from a playoffs 3-0 deficit, when they won 4 straight to defeat Pittsburgh in 1975 NHL Quarter-Finals.

During the final year Marshall played with the Islanders, he was also a assistant coach in 1978-79.

After retiring as a player, Marshall coached the Indianapolis Checkers of the Central Professional Hockey League for 2 seasons before accepting to coach the NHL Colorado Rockies in June, 1981. Marshall lasted just 24 NHL games before he was fired on November 29, 1981.

Marshall later became a scout, having his name stamped/engraved on the Stanley Cup in 2006 with Carolina Hurricanes.

Bert Marshall was inducted into the British Columbia Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003.
