Bucyk made his NHL debut with Detroit Red Wings on October 2, 1955, the 9th annual NHL All-Star Game vs NHL All-Stars at Detroit Olympia in a 3-1 Red Wings win. His regular season debut was on October 6, 1955 vs Chicago Black Hawks at Detroit Olympia in a 3-2 Chicago win.
Bucyk scored his 1st NHL goal vs Gump Worsley of New York Rangers at 13:20 of 2nd period at Detroit Olympia in a 2-0 Red Wings win. His goal was the game winner.
Bucyk scored his 1st NHL hat-trick vs Glenn Hall of Chicago Black Hawks on November 11, 1958 at Chicago Stadium in a 8-4 Boston win.
Bucyk played in 1540 regular season NHL games, scoring 556 goals (92 GWG), 813 assists with 493 penalty minutes and 124 NHL playoff games, scoring 41 goals (3 GWG), 62 assists with 42 penalty minutes.

Among Boston's numerous records was having four 100 point scorers in 1970-71 (Esposito, Orr, Bucyk, and Ken Hodge), the first time that had happened, only repeated by Edmonton in 1983, as well as finishing 1-2-3-4 in league scoring, also the first time that had happened, only repeated by the Bruins in 1974.
Bucyk's jersey No. 9 jersey was retired by the Boston Bruins on March 13, 1980.
Johnny Bucyk was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1981.
Johnny Bucyk was inducted into Massachusetts Hockey Hall of Fame in 2007.
In January 2017, Bucyk was part of the first group of players to be named one of the '100 Greatest NHL Players' in history by the National Hockey League.
