EditThe ELYSIUM, once a landmark at the corner of E. 107th St. and Euclid, opened on November 23, 1907 as a 2000 seat indoor ice rink, it held the title of the world's largest indoor ice skating rink for roughly three years.
Conceived, built and owned by Dudley Humprey and his brothers, it was built in 1907 for a reported $150,000 and named as a result of a contest.
The Elysium became the legendary birthplace of Cleveland Hockey.
The 1st Hockey game played at the Elysium was on December 3, 1907. The game pitted the Clevelands against the Bankers -- two of the four teams that made up Cleveland's first amateur Hockey league. The other two teams in the league included the Collegians and the Ohios.
The Cleveland Athletic Club / Cleveland Hockey Club played at the Elysium in the 1920s, with Jim Cree, one of the early indigenous Hockey players that competed against professional players. He helped Cleveland win the Fellowes Cup in 1921 as USAHA champs.
Home of the American Hockey League / AHL Cleveland Falcons and Cleveland Barons.
The last use of the Elysium was in 1941 and the city of Cleveland acquired the property in 1951, the building, by then dilapidated, was razed and the land used to widen Chester Ave and urban green space.
NOTE
The Elysium had a dark secret, colored people (black) were not allowed inside to see anything, even children from schools were not allowed to skate there.
